Crime Statistics: Crime Victim Rates in the US | CheckVideo

Here at CheckVideo we provide intelligent solutions for security and business operations which act as a crime deterrent, but just how widespread is crime throughout the country?

Many people subscribe to the theory that ā€œit will never happen to me.ā€ But, that theory holds up until the very moment that something does, indeed, happen to them. This goes double when you are a victim of a crime.

Crime is an ever-present danger, regardless of which city you live in, but we wanted to know what the chances are of being a victim of a crime and what cities are more dangerous than others in terms of this metric.

To answer these questions and more, we looked at FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Data and City-Data.com to look at the number of crimes in America ranging from assault to theft by total amount and location and then used population data to determine the chances of being a victim of each crime. Our results are below:

Likelihood of being burgled by city

Overall, the chances of being a victim of burglary range from 1 in 14 to 1 in 943 across the top 50 cities in the country, which is quite a significant range!

Cities with highest and lowest odds of being burgled

Ā 

Looking at the cities with the highest chances of being burgled, residents of Riverside may want to double check their deadbolts and security systems because Riverside residents having a 1 in 14 chance of being burgled.

Atlanta and Miami follow closely behind as the second and third cities with the highest chances of being burgled. If you are a resident in either one, you have a 1 in 17 chance of being burgled.

Atlanta does have more burglaries happening per hour compared to Miami, however, with 3.22 per hour as opposed to 2.95.

Orlando and St. Louis make up the rest of the top five cities with the highest chances of being burgled with Orlando residents having a 1 in 21 chance and St. Louis residents a 1 in 26 chance of being burgled.

When we look at the chances of being burgled by location, it may come as no surprise that residential homes have the highest chance of being burgled, with 35.61 burglaries taking place every hour across the country and a 1 in 1,044 chance of this happening.

Commercial space and office buildings are the second-most likely location to be burgled. There is a 1 in 19,607 chance of this happening and 1.89 burglaries taking place at this type of location every hour.

The location with the lowest chances of being burgled? That would be military installations with a 1 in 3,618,888 chance of getting burgled ā€“ youā€™d have to be pretty bold to try and break into a military base after all!

Chances of being robbed by location

Ā 

Looking at the chances of being a victim of robbery, highways, roads, alleys, streets, and sidewalks are the most likely place with 2.5 robberies happening here every hour and 1 in 14,295 chance of you being a victim here.

The safest place you can be in order to not get robbed is tribal land, with the chances of you being robbed here being 1 in 325,700,000.

Chances of being a victim of arson by location

Sadly, home residences are the most likely locations for arson attacks with 0.79 arson attacks happening every hour in this type of location and the chances of you being a victim of this crime are 1 in 47,572.

Again, military installations are the safest locations from arson with the chances of this happening being 1 in 325,700,000.

Chances of being a victim of theft by location

Ā 

Home residences feature at the top of the list when it comes to theft because 70.31 thefts happen at this type of location every hour. The odds of having theft take place in homes is 1 in 528.

Department stores come in second, unsurprisingly.=, with 25.90 thefts taking place each hour at this type of location and the odds of a department store experiencing theft being 1 in 1,435.

Chances of being assaulted by location

Ā 

No one wants to be a victim of assault, however, assault is closer to home than you might realize. Home residences are the number one location where assaults happen with 92.21 assaults happening every hour and a 1 in 398 chance of an assault happening at this location.

Itā€™s sad to see that elementary and secondary schools feature on this list in fourth place with 4.63 assaults happening every hour. Thereā€™s a 1 in 8,033 chance of assaults happening there which is so very unfortunate

Military installations, again, are one of the safest places to be to safeguard against assault because thereā€™s a 1 in 8,142,500 chance of an assault happening there.

Chances of being kidnapped by location

Looking at kidnappings, home residences are the number one location for kidnappings with 1.43 kidnappings taking place at this location every hour and a 1 in 26,010 chance of kidnappings happening here.

Amusement Parks are the least likely locations for kidnappings with a 1 in 325,700,000 chance of one taking place here.

When we look at the most common crimes at each location, theft seems to be the most common crime, with assault coming in second and burglary coming in third.

Looking specifically at locations we at CheckVideo service, we can see that the number one crime taking place in office buildings is burglary. For construction sites, department stores, and colleges it is theft. And, finally, for elementary and secondary schools, assault is the number one crime.
